„Culture Vultures“ – #33 – „CULTURE VULTURES“ „Are you accent-biased?” [Talk – English version]

21. Januar 2026  – fbs (youtube)

Today “Culture Vultures” pose a provocative question: Are you accent-biased?

Does the accent of someone speaking your language – perhaps with a lower level of fluency – influence how you perceive them?

Research shows that accent bias is real. It shapes our reactions, our behaviour and our judgements – sometimes in subtle ways. An accent can spark admiration or trigger a desire to help. Yet it can just as easily lead to assumptions: that someone is less intelligent, less competent or even less credible.

Now consider the impact in the workplace. Are colleagues with accents heard in the same way during meetings? Are their ideas given equal weight? Do they enjoy the same opportunities to contribute, influence and progress?

And what about you?                                                                                                                                                       How do you respond when someone’s mother tongue is clearly different from your own?                                                   Have you ever noticed yourself – consciously or unconsciously – treating people differently because of it?
