„Culture Vultures“ – #40 – „CULTURE VULTURES“ “Stop pigeon-holing“ [Talk – English version]

Today “Culture Vultures” explore a phenomenon most of us know all too well: pigeon-hole thinking.

That very human tendency to put people, ideas or situations into neat, overly simple categories – often leading to stereotyping and bias. How can we create environments where bi-racial children don’t have to justify who they are and are free to explore, combine and evolve their identities?

In my second book, I address exactly this behaviour. Titled “Raus aus den Schubladen!” in German – loosely translated as “Stop pigeon-holing!” –, the book introduces Black Germans and their lives, opportunities and challenges in a predominantly white society.

I myself have experienced many moments of being pigeon-holed throughout my life. In our conversation, I also reflects on situations where I caught myself doing the same – and share how becoming aware of those moments is an ongoing practice.

What helps you move beyond labels and resist the urge to put people into boxes? We’d love to read your thoughts in the comments.
