„Culture Vultures“ #20 – „WHAT QUALITIES, VALUES OR HABITS SHAPE GERMAN IDENTITY?“ [Talk – English version]

15. Oktober 2025  – fbs (youtube)

Ready for the next round of ‘Culture Vultures’?

This time, we, Florence and Bettina, talk about identification – and explore the traits, habits and values that make Florence (feel) German.

  • I, Florence share how sayings from my German foster mother – “What you start, you have to finish” or “One never talks about how much one earns” – still shape her today and form part of her identity.
  • I also reflect on my sense of diligence and my aversion to superficiality – qualities she recognises as deeply German – and how having lived abroad for a while made these even more pronounced.

What about You? Which culture do you most identify with? What defines the “cultural being” you are – the values, the sayings, the everyday habits
