„Culture Vultures“ – #34 – „CULTURE VULTURES“ „When politeness silences truth“ [Talk – English version]

28. Januar 2026  – fbs (youtube)

Today “Culture Vultures” explores a delicate tension: truth vs. politeness. Those moments when we choose not to voice an uncomfortable truth – for the perceived benefit of being “polite”, not wanting to intrude and avoiding embarrassment or hurt.

How we define politeness is deeply cultural. What feels respectful in one context may seem evasive – or even dishonest – in another. Sharing uncomfortable truths or giving critical feedback can feel daunting, even abrasive – and is therefore often avoided altogether. Even Florence and I, coming from fairly similar cultural backgrounds, don’t completely agree on when feedback is polite, how it should be delivered or where exactly the line is drawn. After all, the perception of politeness is also very personal.

What about you? Are you comfortable sharing your honest opinion when it may not be welcomed? Do you know how to frame it so the other person doesn’t feel offended – but can still take something useful from it … and perhaps even change behaviour?
