Today, Culture Vultures turns to a topic we all experience differently at various stages of life: Youth Language.
Those words and expressions that seem to appear overnight, widely used by young people – and often puzzling to everyone else. But what purpose do they serve?
Youth language works like a shared code. It creates identity and belonging: if you understand and use it, you signal “I’m one of you”. Meaning is often contextual, ironic, even deliberately vague. It is not about linguistic correctness or eloquence; it is about attunement – how something feels rather than what it literally means. “Six-seven”, for example, can simply mean “so-so”, “I’m okay-ish” – no explanation required. Belonging comes from emotional resonance, not factual clarity.
What is your take on youth language? And if we asked you how you are – would you say “six-seven”(hand gesture included)?
