„Culture Vultures“ – #37 – „CULTURE VULTURES“The past that still speaks“ [Talk – English version]

18. Februar 2026  – fbs (youtube)

Today, Culture Vultures tackles a topic that is still often labelled “too political”: colonial history. A past that is frequently avoided, softened or swept under the carpet – and whose damaging effects on people and societies are still too rarely acknowledged.

The past has a way of unsettling comfortable stories about who we are. It reminds us that today’s inequalities did not emerge by accident. Acknowledging history inevitably raises questions about responsibility in the present.

I, Florence reflect on how “colonial” symbols, objects and stereotypes are still visible in everyday life and how they continue to be held onto, even when we know how deeply insulting and harmful they can be. Silence may feel neutral, but it isn’t. It quietly protects existing power structures. Avoiding the topic is not apolitical. It is a choice.

What do you think? Do we need to be more honest about our past, more open with our history and more willing to change?
