Today, “Culture Vultures” dives into yet another sensitive topic: racism close to home.
Racism is challenging enough. When it comes from people we love, the emotional complexity increases even more. How do we respond when family or close friends express racist views? Do we try to educate? Set boundaries? Protect our own emotional energy while preserving the relationship?
I, Florence share my experiences with “close-to-home” racism, how my mum navigated it and my personal perspective on calling it out, refusing to “tolerate nonsense” and relying on allies who help reinforce that racist behaviour is never acceptable.
