Using Germany as an example, Florence and I explore some of the pitfalls of systems that claim to promote equal opportunity, yet often struggle to deliver on that promise. Early categorisation within school programmes can quietly shape – and limit – educational pathways later on, especially for children from less privileged backgrounds.
We zoom in on cultural bias in the classroom: students who speak up quickly, answer fast and participate more assertively are frequently perceived as more intelligent, capable or skilled. Those who take longer to reflect, listen attentively or contribute in a more “democratic” way may be overlooked, despite the depth and quality of their thinking.
What is your take? How can education systems better cater to a wide range of talents, learning styles and personalities? And do some systems genuinely give teachers enough flexibility to adapt curricula and teaching approaches – so that as many pupils as possible leave school with not just knowledge, but also skills and confidence?
